'Tis the Season of Goodwill
‘Tis the season of Goodwill
“Goodwill to all men”. What an earth’s that all about?! Just think about that for a moment. Why do we have to wait for Christmas to be nice to each other?!
Actually that’s one of the big problems in the world today: the baby boomer generation have been brought up to aspire almost at all costs…to better themselves. Indeed there’s a whole industry that epitomises this: the Self Development Industry. The consequence of all this aspiration?…Stress!
By the way, I’m not knocking Christmas or the Self Development Industry! Nor am I a raving anti-establishment leftie!
Christmas is a wonderful time to re-connect with family and friends and goodness knows we need special occasions designed for this in our stressful “200 miles an hour" lives. The modern family “purpose” of Christmas has of course almost eclipsed the real religious reasons for the holiday. But we need Christmas to reconnect with humanity, to rediscover that our lives are about people, especially those close to us.
As for the Self Development Industry: well I’d be the last person to advocate sitting on our hands and accepting our lot! However, we don’t have to develop ourselves at the cost of others. Where’s the spiritual side of most of the Self Development Industry? For the most part it doesn’t exist; it’s too wrapped up making a profit.
The real problem is that we have all been trained to turn in on ourselves by the materialist dream. And it’s funny, we all know that money doesn’t buy happiness, but our whole lives are driven by this urge to maximise our income and all it does is bring us stress. “How can we be happy without loads of money?” That's actually not what life need be about!
This is a huge part of our generation’s childhood programming: it means that every bit of information that comes through from the world around us goes through a filter that says “I need loads of money”. It’s deeply embedded in our Unconscious and changes the way we see the world.
Humanity needs to adapt the materialist dream: to earn lots of money, but for the benefit of others as well as ourselves. There can be no doubt that it is easier to help others if we are wealthy.
So before too many of you say "Bah Humbug", let me genuinely wish you a Happy Christmas and let’s see if we can’t make the “Spirit of Christmas” last all year long!!

Winning Minds also runs workshops for Stress Transformation for individuals and for companies and their employees. Many people then “graduate” from these, having learnt to “manage” their stress, to The Liberation Experience which sets them free to find the Road to Fulfillment. Some prefer to do this on a one-to-one basis through tailored Therapy and Life Coaching sessions.
