Healthy Dieting Tips, How Hard Should Be To Follow A Diet Plan?

Our nutrient intake does not always match our nutrient need. Most of us take in too many calories, too much fat, sugar, and sodium, and not enough of the vitamins and minerals our body needs to function properly. Eating a healthy diet plan can help minimize the risk of developing nutrition-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity.

When thinking about how to eat well, there are three basic ideas to keep in mind: balance, variety, and moderation. Balance means choosing foods from all of the food groups. Variety means choosing different types of foods within each food group. Moderation means controlling portion sizes of the foods we eat.

A balanced intake includes items from all of the food groups. Each food group provides our bodies with different nutrients

Variety and balance are very closely related when it is concerning a healthy diet. Balance will tell you to eat foods from all of the food groups and variety will say that you need to pick out different foods within each food group.

There is no one single food that can give your body every nutrient it needs to function as well as help protect you from nutrient related diseases. By having a varied healthy diet, you are setting yourself up for success since variety will help ensure you have all the needed nutrients. Broccoli is a terrific source for foliate, although if that is all you eat everyday you will not receive enough vitamin A that can be found in carrots.

Variety in your diet also keeps things interesting. If you eat the same meals every day you will eventually become bored and may stray from your healthy eating pattern. Try new fruits and vegetables depending on what is in season, make a healthy recipe using new foods, or jazz up an old favorite by adding new foods to an existing dish.

Another great reason to have a myriad of different food in your diet is to obtain Phytochemicals. Phytochemicals will only be found within whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and will not be present in any vitamin supplement. Phytochemicals will dramatically improve your chances of not getting heart disease or cancer.

Moderation comes into play in a healthy diet because there are no good or bad foods. As you have already seen, all of the food groups are important because of the different nutrients they provide. In addition, if you deprive yourself of your favorite foods, you will most likely want them even more and end up eating more than you should. The key is to focus on moderating intake instead of eliminating foods.

Moderation also means watching portion size. Remember that a serving of meat should be 3 ounces which is about the size of a deck of cards, a serving of regular mayonnaise is 1 teaspoon, and a serving of milk is 8 ounces or 1 cup. One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to eat properly is overestimating portion sizes. It is also important to watch portion sizes in restaurants as most dishes can serve two to three people.

Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet does not have to be hard. Try keeping a food journal and always eat in moderation. In no time at all you can be on a long lasting healthy diet!
