Starting a fast – with no solid foods, just drinking juice – seems to be really catching on. People wanting to shed some pounds have taken to this popular diet fad.

Although some people swear by this method for losing weight, it's really not the best choice to make when looking for a weight loss method. Celebrities seem to be on almost every tabloid in the supermarkets, claiming to have shed the pounds by juice fasting over the course of a week. Of course these articles are often accompanied by the hideous 'before picture' with an amazing 'after photo' posted right next to it.

Juice fasting is also being hailed as a medical wonder for helping the body with different types of ailments or illnesses. This hype is easily swallowed up by those who are desperate for something that works after medication has failed them.

Although quite surely a misguided faith in the belief that going on a fast for up to a week, drinking only juice, can "cure" your ailments, it can still somehow be a driving force to do it. Medical research has yet to prove such claims, however there are individuals who actually do report an improvement in their general health.

When juice fasting, people don't really notice a feeling of deprivation where food is concerned; the juice makes the people feel full. Not only are these trend setters consuming juice, but also have an increased water intake as well. Juice fasting is also useful when trying to detox your body to rid yourself of toxins, but it is crucial that the correct types of juice are consumed in order for this to happen. If you try detoxing with sugar laden juices, your body will only wind up converting that sugar into fat and store it in your body.

Some people do not tolerate juice fasting very well and experience unpleasant side effects. Constipation from the lack of fiber is a common concern for some people who do the juice fast.

Stomach acid production can increase, thereby causing heartburn, upset stomach, nausea, and even acid reflux. Heartburn, in some instances, can even get so bad that it keeps people from their normal sleep pattern.

When embarking on a juice fast, apple, carrot, cabbage, wheatgrass, tomato, and other kinds of juices high in naturally plentiful essential nutrients are most beneficial. Deciding just how much do drink each day will vary from person to person.
