How To Recognise Depression And Anxiety

You might have days or even a week where you feel down or blue. You may even come to say that you feel depressed but its the depression and anxiety that causes people to lose their way in life or see marriages fail or jobs lost because of it that really have it as an illness. Feeling blue and being depressed are in essence two very different things.

A nice house, a good job, no financial worries yet you are depressed or down, maybe you panic over nothing and getting anxious has begun to start to take you and your life over, this is when it really needs addressing.

Depression when referred to as an illness is when someone is feeling depressed all the time even when they are doing something that normally makes them very happy, they do not feel that their spirits have been lifted. This can often lead to turning to something that distracts them, this may be drinking, avoiding socializing or having to take time off work.

Anxiety is different to depression and gives the sufferer different problems. Some often explain that they have panic attacks and very often feel uncomfortable and sometimes even paranoid. Tied in with this they may worry so much that it causes other stress related illnesses making life even harder for them and those around them.

To help depression people usually firstly think of tablets and various types of medication, whereas this can help it but may only help for short periods of time and it won't always address the root cause of the problem. Counseling and in particular behavioral therapy can often look at what is causing the depression and how to prevent it in the future without any drug side effects.

They can both be treated well with something called CBT also known as Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This is where a therapist will work out why the patient does or feels the things they do. They look for behavior associated to their condition and then work backwards to see if they can stop that pattern of behavior.

For example someone could be depressed and using therapy they may find out that looking back they feel they have gone onto the wrong career path and ultimately it is their work that is depressing them. So a suggestion to get onto a different career path may help them. For someone who has panic attacks in large stores they may realize that they were once lost as a kid in a large store and that kick starts the panic. Sometimes knowing the basis of our fears and worries can help us to control and even eliminate them.
