How Good Nutrition Keeps Your Hair Healthy

There are a number of reasons people lose their hair or suffer poor hair health. One of these is a shortage of sulphur in the diet. This nutrient is found in meat and dairy products.

90% or more of the hair is made up of protein. The hair could become thin or be lost if not enough protein is eaten. This may seem unlikely but people are eating less protein these days and some are experimenting with low protein diets for weight loss. Quality protein foods such as eggs for instance may in these circumstances be beneficial for the health of the hair.

Protein foods, even if enough is eaten may not be properly absorbed and utilized by the body because of deficiencies of digestive enzymes and stomach acid. This will also affect other nutrients important for hair health such as vitamins and minerals. There is no simple answer to this. A complete appraisal of the diet will be needed. Nutritional supplements containing digestive enzymes may be required.

Water is important to help feed the hair. Beverages like alcohol and coffee dehydrate the body. Adequate hydration required drinking half a dozen glasses of water a day.

For healthy and shiny hair you need adequate amounts of vitamin A. Good sources of this nutrient include dairy products, eggs and liver. We can also get it in the form of beta carotene from vegetables and fruits. However to convert beta carotene to vitamin A, adequate thyroid hormones need to be produced. Many people do not have an optimally functioning thyroid.

The B vitamins especially B5, B12, folic acid biotin and inositol are also required for healthy hair.

Stress has a negative effect on the body, including the hair. It can deplete B vitamins and other nutrients. Any activity that helps to alleviate stress is valuable. Excessive sugar consumption should also be avoided at this acts as a drain on the body's B vitamins and minerals.

The scalp requires a good supply of nutrients brought to it via the circulation. Good circulation requires regular exercise. Scalp massage is also helpful.

If your diet and lifestyle is affecting the health of your hair, a good nutritionist or naturopath can help.
