Exercise Phrases

If you are trying to get rid of body fat and you want to take your knowledge to the next level, you will have to do some exercise physiology research. Although this is not necessary per se, having a more profound knowledge base helps you make better decisions about diets and programs.

Unfortunately, you may get a little lost amongst all the terminology. After all, the deeper you dig into a subject the more complex the vocabulary and terminology will become.

Hence, here is a review of exercise phrases for exercise science:

1. Positive, concentric contractions. This is the portion of the exercise that most people focus on. When you do a shoulder press, for instance, pushing the weight up is the positive or concentric portion of the movement.

2. An eccentric contraction. This can be viewed as the opposite of a concentric contraction because in this case the muscle is shortening. So whenever you lower the weight during a bicep curl, for instance, you are performing an eccentric contraction.

3. An exercise completion. Performing an exercise through completion does not involve simply doing a positive or negative contraction. Instead, it involves doing an exercise though its entire range of motion. In other words, going through the starting portion, middle portion and end portion.

4. One complete repetition. A repetition can be viewed as the singular unit of an exercise movement. In other words, it involves doing an exercise through the positive and negative portions. Repetitions are grouped into sets.

5. An exercise set. A set is simply a group of repetitions to be performed in sequence. Once you dive into some more advanced texts, you will encounter advanced terminology such as super sets. A super set is the completion of one exercise set right after another without any rest in between.

Now my personal recommendation is to broaden your knowledge on nutrition and exercise science as much as possible within your own limits. In other words, do NOT try to learn everything in one shot. Any time you acquire a new skill or new knowledge it takes some time before you can internalize the new information.
