Anxiety is now so ubiquitous in the modern world that science is calling it a “Disorder”: General Anxiety Disorder!
Whilst the specific triggers for anxiety differ from person to person, the increase in general speed of modern life and within that, the speed of change, has lead to increasing levels of anxiety over the last 40 years. Interestingly, our levels of wealth have gone up in equal measure…and there lies the rub!
20th and 21st century society compels us to be the best in everything we do, creating an environment of competition in our lives, with ideals beyond which most of us can reach; this leaves many of us feeling inadequate. Nowhere is this greater than in the area of wealth; we are not allowed to be happy with what we’ve got and are driven to always aspire to the bigger car, the bigger TV, the bigger house. This means we’re always looking to the future and craving more, instead of being happy right now. And guess what? You can’t be happy now in the future…you can only be happy now!
Most people these days have heard of the “flight or flight response”, whereby our body goes on red alert when we’re in danger. Its real purpose is to prepare us for when we come across a sabre-tooth tiger. The problem today is that our life is very rarely in that level in danger; however, we do get a lot of little stresses (like money worries) and our fight or flight response fires off automatically.
When something bad happens in our lives, we start to worry and right now, we’re all worrying about money because of the recession. The problem with worry is it’s all in our imagination! What if I lose my job? What if I can’t pay my bills? What if I lose my house? All imagination!
This is the important bit: our Unconscious Mind (91% of our total mind, which stores our emotions, such as happiness…and anxiety and runs the fight or flight response), cannot tell the difference between something we’ve imagined and something that’s real. So when we tell ourselves how worried we are about losing our jobs, the Unconscious assumes it’s actually happened and releases all of the adrenalin, nor-adrenalin and cortisol and creates all of the physical symptoms of anxiety.
We do not have Conscious control over this process; there’s nothing we can do about it, as somebody with Panic Attacks will tell you.
So why is it that there are people with lives way more stressful and anxiety-inducing than our own, who are cool, calm and collected? Simple: the programming in their Unconscious (filtering systems such as childhood programming, beliefs, values, experiences etc) through which they interpret the incoming information from the world around them, doesn’t interpret it as dangerous.
So the answer to overcoming anxiety is to get to the bottom of what’s really causing the anxiety and changing the programming to a more positive and real view of the world; then there’s no anxiety. Neural Recoding is designed specifically to achieve this.
